Why we chose Whistler

We met in Whistler and consider it our favorite home.  We just wish we could stay here and make a living!  We love the Creekside area as it is quieter and more peaceful than the main village and makes an easier commute back to Vancouver.  We can walk everywhere and leave the big city life behind.  We purchased this townhome in 2002 and enjoyed many events during the 2010 Winter Olympics, especially the luge events at the Sliding Center.  Today the events we most enjoy along with the skiing are, the Scandinave Spa, Meadow Park Sports Centre for swimming and indoor skating, the Whistler Olympic Plaza for outdoor skating and of course Après with our family and friends at many of the bars in Whistler.  There is always great live music and fabulous refreshments for all ages.

What makes this townhouse unique

Our entire first floor has heated floors, we have a full wall of windows overlooking Creekside Village and Alpha lake. A larger hot water tank, air jetted tub, heated ski/bike/storage room, our own laundry facilities and a gas BBQ are just some of the amenities we have added to enjoy the great skiing that Whistler has to offer.

Whistler

The Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) has a permanent population of approximately 14,000 plus a larger but rotating "transient" population of workers, typically younger people from beyond British Columbia, notably from Australia and Europe.  Whistler is also one of the most-visited ski resort, often besting 3 million visitors a year.  The Village is 675 m (2,215 ft) above sea level.  Its pedestrian village has won numerous design awards and Whistler has been voted among the top destinations in North America by major ski magazines since the mid-1990s.  During the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler hosted most of the alpine, Nordic, luge, skeleton, and bobsled events, though freestyle skiing and all snowboarding events were hosted at Cypress Mountain near Vancouver.  Whistler was the Host Mountain Resort of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, the first time the IOC has bestowed that designation on a community.  Whistler hosted the alpine technical and speed events, the sliding events at Fitzsimmons Creek, the Nordic events in the nearby Callaghan Valley and all the Paralympic events except the opening ceremonies, sledge hockey and wheelchair curling.

THE SLOPES

The Mountains

Whistler Blackcomb is a major ski resort located 121 km (75 mi) north of Vancouver, in British Columbia, Canada.  Together, Whistler and Blackcomb form the largest ski area in North America at 8,171 acres (3,307 hectares).  Either mountain alone would be in the top-five in terms of size.

Whistler Mountain

Whistler Mountain is the basis of the southern of two ridges, on the right when looking at the Whistler-Blackcomb ski area from Whistler Village.  It has a summit elevation of 2,182 meters (7,160 feet).  The total vertical drop is 1,530 meters (5,020 feet) and 4,757 acres (1,925 ha) ski-able inbound terrain.  Whistler is served by 2 high-speed gondolas, 2 high-speed 8-pack, 2 high-speed 6-pack, 3 high-speed quads, 2 triple chairs and 1 T-bar.

Blackcomb Mountain

Blackcomb Mountain is the northern ridge, on the left when viewed from the Village.  It has a lift-serviced elevation of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) at the top of the 7th Heaven chair – Blackcomb Mountain itself is higher at 2,440 meters (8,010 feet), but unlike Whistler, the peak is not lift-served.  Blackcomb has a higher ski-able vertical, at 1,565 meters (5,135 feet), but less in-bound skiing area at 3,414 acres (1,382 ha).  It is served by 2 high-speed gondolas, 1 high- speed 6-pack, 5 high-speed quads, 1 triple chair and 1 T-bar.

Peak 2 Peak Gondola

The Peak 2 Peak Gondola connects the two mountains at approximately 1,800 meters (5,900 feet).  The lift has a total length of 4.4 km (2.7 mi) and the longest unsupported span for a lift of its kind in the world at 3.02 km (1.88 mi) while also having the highest ground clearance for a lift of its kind, 436 meters (1,430 feet) above the valley floor.

Snowfall

Whistler Blackcomb is blessed with a historical average of 1,170 cm / 11.70 meters / 461 inches / 38.4 feet per year, measured at the Pig Alley Weather Station on Whistler Mountain (Mid-Mountain: elevation 1,660 meters/ 5,445 feet).

Base Record

The snow base record for Whistler Mountain is 504 cm (197 inches, 16.4 feet) set in 1973/74.
